CDC Participates in Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live!

Visit the new CDC Museum exhibit "What’s Cooking, Uncle Sam? The Government’s Effect on the American Diet," opening on Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Live!

On Saturday, September 27, 2014, the David J. Sencer CDC Museum, located at CDC Headquarters, will join museums and cultural institutions around the country for the tenth annual Smithsonian magazine Museum Day Live! This immensely successful program, in which museums emulate the free admission policy of the Smithsonian Institution's Washington, D.C.-based facilities, encourages learning and the spread of knowledge nationwide.

Museum Day Live! is inclusive by design. It represents Smithsonian's commitment to make learning accessible to everyone. Last year's event drew over 400,000 participants, nation-wide. Record-high participation is expected in 2014.The David J. Sencer CDC Museum is always free to the public.

"This is a great opportunity for us to show the community, through our exhibits, the importance of public health and the many ways that CDC works to save lives and protect people from health threats."

The David J. Sencer CDC Museum, a Smithsonian Affiliate, educates visitors about the value of prevention-based public health, while presenting CDC's rich heritage and vast accomplishments. The museum hosts more than 90,000 visitors each year, and provides popular educational programs for students.

On view will be the permanent exhibit, The Story of CDC, and the temporary exhibition, What's Cooking, Uncle Sam? The Government's Effect on the American Diet, which was organized by the National Archives and Records Administration, Washington, D.C. This exhibition lets visitors explore the records of the National Archives that trace the Government's effect on what Americans eat—from the farm to the dinner table.
